That Winter, The Wind Blows Episode 16 (FINALE) : A Little Bit More Theories and Thoughts Part II

Okay, I think that this should be my last post about theories on the final episode.

As per my previous post, I have finally watched Episode 16 on Sunday and was desperately trying to find clues/truth about Oh Soo’s fate in the finale.

Did he die….or survived?

And I was like freaking sad on Sunday night, a tear or two came out but I was more determined to find out the truth about him in the drama, so I found a great theory that makes a lot of sense written by a blogger, and I feel so much better now haha. At least now I found the closure that I have been looking for.

Below was extracted from a blogger’s comment about the finale, particularly about the details that was left unexplained…

“…After being stabbed by Jin Sung, cos Boss Man threatened Jin Sung with the safety of his family, Soo knew that being around Young could be dangerous for her too since Jin Sung didn’t finish the job by killing Soo. Boss Man might hire other guys to kill Soo. Thus,  Soo had to lay low for a while, but the whole time he checked up on Young through Secretary Wang and knew that Young came out of surgery well and had her chemotherapy and was recovering. Meanwhile Soo left Seoul to recover from his wound and find his career path in life. He did tell Young that he was thinking of becoming a chef so he really pursued it. Now that I think about it, if he went to Young right after being stabbed, he is basically going to have to live off her money. He will be a freeloader cos gambling was the only thing he ever did to earn money so he had to find himself first. Like he said to Young – he didn’t call cos he didn’t have the courage – what if she didn’t like what she saw – he wasn’t just talking about his looks – it’s who he is as a person and a man. Now that he has a reputable job, he won’t need to rely on Young for money. He can stand on his own two feet and look at her squarely in the eye and no one can accuse him of loving her for her money. His pride is intact.

What I found interesting was how Soo and Young spoke Jondae (formal speech) at first and then he slipped back to Banmal (Informal speech) and asked when she started to know [the truth about who he was (cos all she heard was the bell sound), where he was, and what he had been doing] Through that earlier conversation Young was able to confirm that Soo never once felt uncomfortable about her being blind and not being able to look at the person you love in the eye is not something that bothered him. Cos from Day One – she saw him. Really saw him for who he was – a man who had gone through life with the most tragic start, but continued to find the will to live. A man who carried around so much pain, but kept it buried within him so he could live each day. She saw that in him when everyone else couldn’t – that’s why he fell in love with her. She was the only one who could turn his life around – all the bad things in his past can now be erased cos she is going to love him and fill that void in his heart left by his mother who never gave him any love. In essence, Young’s love will make up for a lifetime of neglect and feeling abandoned…”

This, was by far, my favourite comment ever, really well-written, it explains everything and makes perfect sense. And it comforted me haha, knowing that Soo was meant to be alive in the finale.

And then I was more convinced when I read Song Hye-Gyo’s interview before the finale was aired in South Korea, she revealed that it was a happy ending, and when asked if the writer was pressured by fans to set it as a happy ending, she replied that it was meant to be a happy ending when the writer first wrote it. Ok, now I am way more convinced that the ending means that Oh Soo and Oh Young are still alive.

And then, everyone’s asking, including me : What the heck happened to Boss Man?

I mean, how can Oh Soo happily open a restaurant in Seoul with Boss Man lurking around? I would like to think that Boss Man got arrested for his bad deeds and bad hair. And So Ra probably got deported back from Italy to sit in jail with Boss Man.

However, one sad thing that I noted was that both Oh Soo and Oh Young never got to see their mothers. Oh Soo, especially, never got the time or chance in the drama to find his mother. I saw some speculations online saying that Secretary Wang could be Oh Soo’s mother WTF thank God Writer Noh did not go for that otherwise it would all seem very soap opera-ish, like some episode from the never-ending Days of Our Lives or something.

Anyway, what matters the most is that Oh Soo and Oh Young ended up happily, with both actors giving superb performances for their characters, and sometimes, I think it’s better not to over-analyze anything.

Cos whenever we over-think something, we tend to overlook the simple details in front of us.
